Wow, it is hard to believe that I am already halfway through my internship with Always Hired. Summer always seems to fly by and these last few months have been no exception. Being in the startup world magnifies this phenomenon, since everything is happening so quickly and we are hosting so many events. Well, without further ado, here is an update of how my internship has been going.
Just like in all new jobs, there is going to be a lot of information given to you at the very beginning. I would even argue that an internship with a startup will have some of the most information packed into a short time period. It was tough at the beginning when I was learning different kinds of software as well as researching and implementing best practices for Instagram and Twitter (the accounts I manage). However, I dealt with it and feel very comfortable with all the tools that have been taught to me.
Another challenge of this job has been prioritizing different projects as extenuating circumstances arise. For example, I have been tasked with producing and editing multiple videos for various reasons. Since these videos were quite time-consuming compared to average projects, I was forced to balance these videos with other looming deadlines. Luckily I have been blessed with an amazing education and upbringing that have prepared me for times like these.
Although there have definitely been challenges along the way, I feel like I have accomplished a lot in my time with Always Hired. It will be interesting to see what my internship portfolio looks like at the end of this experience. I have been involved in many things that I wouldn’t have imagined when I first joined the company. I definitely didn’t think I would be utilizing video production skills I learned in high school. But that’s all part of being in a startup. You have to be willing to wear multiple hats and be a team player. Job responsibilities are fluid and depend on what the company needs to accomplish that day. That is definitely one of the bigger lessons I will take away from this experience.
I am hoping that the second half of my internship is slower than the first half. Not only because I cherish my summer like I’m sure many of you do, but I have also forged some great relationships with members of the Always Hired team. This team really knows when to have fun and when to prioritize work. And I think that is extremely important for any organization. It makes you look forward to coming to work. It motivates you to do the best you can for the company because you truly care about its success.
I am excited to continue to learn from all of my extremely intelligent coworkers. And with the several weeks I have left, I want to continue to push to achieve the goals I have been setting for myself throughout the internship. I will certainly need your help in achieving some of these goals, which I have listed below:
- Increase total engagements by 20%
- Learn some sales and interview skills that will help me get a job in the future
- Increase total instagram followers from 367 to 650 (currently ~ 460, this is going to be an uphill battle)
- Learn 5 types of software that I could use if I were to run my own business
I have made good progress on #1, #2, and #4, but #3 is going to take some hard work. Please help me achieve these goals by interacting with me on Twitter and Instagram. And don’t forget to follow our LinkedIn and Facebookpages as well!
Best regards,
Kevin Lehman
